Over a year ago, Sony announced that it had purchased a minority stake in Discord and was working towards full integration of the social network on the PS5 and PS4 in 2022. The platform holder even closed down its popular Communities console feature, presumably in preparation for the service’s addition. It’s been more than 12 months, and so far all Discord users are able to do is show their PlayStation play activity.
Now the Japanese giant has been embarrassingly beaten to the punch. Microsoft has revealed that it’s bringing Discord voice calls to the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, although there are caveats to the functionality. Specifically, you’ll need to use your smartphone to get everything setup and then transfer the call to your console, which is far from seamless.
We’re hopeful that Sony’s integration will go deeper than this, and – while it’s unlikely – it’s possible that Microsoft may be getting this news out before PlayStation announces something much more robust. Nevertheless, this is a curious twist: after much chest-beating from the Japanese giant about its transformative integration of Discord, it’s actually Xbox who’s rolling out a key feature first.
PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said that we’d see the fruits of its collaboration with Discord starting early 2022 – well, it’s now late July, and we’re still waiting…

I use Discord a lot when I game on PC, and it's effortless really.
Can imagine whichever console is being used, that it will not be entirely seamless compared to PC gaming.
The Quarrel app on the Microsoft Store is a good alternative to Discord and can be used for party chat with other Quarrel and Discord users alike.
It's gd ,been waiting for for.this for a long time , also it's just for Xbox insiders at the moment but will soon release to everyone on Xbox
I'm not exactly surprised.
Discord support for UNIX based systems have been quite awful if compared to Windows version, and PS does run a UNIX system.
Have you looked at the details of how Xbox is implementing Discord voice chat? I'd rather wait for it to be done right. We can only hope proper integration is what's taking Sony so long.
@TheCollector316 it's only for insiders at the moment so chances are when it is fully released they will have proper implementation , it takes time to put stuff like that into the dashboard
Snitches get stitches so watch out Discord. Jokes aside, it's just a matter of time until it hits Playstation. And btw I miss the community feature.
Sony got scammed again huh? They invested into them and Microsoft gets some actual Features long before them. Just lol.
@Martsmall
That's possible, but it is more likely the feature rolls out to all users the way it currently is and improves further down the road with proper implementation. In any case, Xbox is currently not doing it right. It is my hope PlayStation is taking their time doing it right from the start, but we'll see how that goes.
@TheCollector316 It does mention that in the article.
I believe in Playstation.
@IonMagi my pig dude, you know before that investment Xbox was already working with Discord and that's why MS tried to buy them right? These implementations take time, a lot more time than one year in the middle of a pandemic 😂
With Xbox running a version of windows I'd imagine some of the features would be quicker to implement then PlayStation. Hopefully it isn't long before we find out more.
@get2sammyb
Yes, of course. My comment was not directed to you, the article's skilled author. It was directed to the "royal you." Apologies for not being more clear. Keep up the great work.
Sammy boy never disappoints "been embarrassingly beaten to the punch" yikes.
Yes because MS tried to buy Discord just because and not because Xbox and Discord were working together before Sony investment and making a voice chat implementation in the middle of a global crisis for an OS different than what MS uses takes ONE year. 😂😂😂
I need a translator for this headline.
Discord. Meanwhile, neither the PS5 or Series X support Dolby Vision or HDR10+ for 4K Blu-ray discs. How about adding basic functionality instead of new chat features?
@zupertramp https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=pipped+to+the+punch
Even google melts down at that one.
@WadeIsInsane it's good to report what the other consoles do sometimes as PlayStation fans probably don't read Xbox news. If we don't know what features Xbox has that PlayStation doesn't, then we don't know what we're missing in order to express interest so that Sony may implement something similar in the future.
I still hope Sony will implement multi-game suspension/resume at some point.
@Richnj lol. While "beaten to the punch" is quite familiar to me, "pipped to the post" is definitely a new one. It seems I needed knowledge of both lol. I do love this site for that.
@zupertramp Yeah, "pipped to the post" is brand new to me too.
There is increasing push to make consoles like PC gaming communities. When I use my PlayStation I VC with my friends, never use it as a text chat platform. Discord integration is cool , I guess, but there is no way I am bringing up Discord servers on my PlayStation.
For the old and layman, what's a discord?
The PlayStation software engineering team must consist of a maximum of 2 or 3 people. It's the only explanation for features taking so long to add. Apart from the fact that Sony consoles only have 2 major firmware updates per year.
@PhhhCough chat rooms. Both text and voice chat rooms.
Somewhere Ryan is pretending not to care.
We know his a little miffed about it.
The Discord Playstation integration is trash. They made it sound like it was just the beginning but it went code dark after that with no eta on anything so I assumed it was final. I can't believe we lost PlayStation communities for this.
@PhhhCough Picture a swamp, festering with disease-laden leeches where brainless mockeries of human forms attempt to consume one another, pulling them down into the murky, dank, cesspit of their caustic, unholy, desolation.
Discord's not as good, but it's comparable.
@D34DL1N3R Dolby Vision support is a Licensing topic and needs money. Sony doesn’t want to invest that.
HDR10+ is barely used and mainly pushed by Samsung.
@Reeneman Sony's stand alone 4K players have DV support. So do their televisions. Saying they don't want to invest in that is complete nonsense.
HDR10+ is barely used? Just for starters, the entire Amazon Prime HDR video catalog is in HDR10+.
I already paid over $500 for a SONY console that has a 4K Blu-ray player in it, why should I have to dish out several hundred more? They could do something as simple as make people that want it pay for a license. Just like how people can purchase a license for Dolby and DTS for headphones at a low cost. Xbox already has DV licensing so there's have no excuse on Microsofts end.
@D34DL1N3R but it’s different. The price calculation and expected features from a stand alone UHD BD player are different than the ones from a gaming console.
Sony would need to pay licensing fees for nearly every sold ps5 or whatever kind of deal they would make with Dolby. Dolby makes a lot of money with this stuff.
To say their TVs or players have DV and therefore they will implement this on ps5 as well is nonsense sorry.
I would be happy to have these features because I use my ps5 as well as UHD player, at least the very rare occasions when I watch a movie on disc.
It was similar with audio Cd playback on ps4 - technically it would be possible, their Stand alone player will have this feature, too… but it’s not on the console because of the licensing fees for each device.
To sell it individually as a license that the user can buy on her/his console, yes this would be an idea for sure. But we know Sony, they are not that much into this additional stuff.
@GymratAmarillo not only was it likely that MS was already working on it, merging another 3rd party service to provide a function isn’t exactly desirable and also a bit taboo in Japanese consumer culture.
@BeerIsAwesome Lol don’t be too butthurt about this…
Patience. It’s coming in a future major software update and will be integrated well
@TheCollector316 Full implementation is what I'm waiting for, they can take their sweet time.
@SpicyTacos101 Muhahahahaaa great joke. 🤣🤣🤣
When I see so much money flying from SONY's pocket straight down the toilet, I silently stopped purchasing games on PS and start to buy games on Switch...
@TheCollector316 keep waiting... I'm sure once xbox irons everything out and launches "full integration" after this Sony won't be far behind... Lol
Xbox just be doing things to change the industry can't imagine this will be any different.
Xbox will have "full integration" either before or at least same time that Sony gets it.
@TheCollector316 the only thin Sony is waiting for is for Xbox to do all the work and get it "right" so they can then copy them like they do with so many other services.
The "copium" going on in this comment section is palpable! Lol
